Common ways support is delivered

  • Career exploration and job matching

A service may discuss interests, skills and support needs, then help identify suitable roles or employers.

  • Workplace preparation or coaching

Support may include interview practice, work routines, communication strategies or a job coach, depending on the programme.

  • Follow-along support

Some providers check in after a person starts work and discuss adjustments with the person's consent.

A guide to the process

What the process may involve

  1. 1Discuss preferred work, strengths, support needs and consent for employer contact.
  2. 2Clarify whether help includes job search, placement, workplace adjustments or follow-up.
  3. 3Ask how long post-placement support may continue and how concerns are handled.

Time and commitment

There is no universal duration for employment support. The Labour Department's Selective Placement Division states that it follows up for at least 6 months after placement; this is its published service arrangement, not a standard across all providers. Ask how often contact occurs and what continues afterward.

Hong Kong service pathways

The Labour Department's Selective Placement Division offers free employment services to job seekers with disabilities who are fit for open employment, including counselling, job matching and post-placement follow-up. SWD's Supported Employment Training is a separate pathway with different eligibility and support. Confirm current criteria directly.

How it differs from related support

Employment support is different from vocational training, although a provider may offer both. Ask whether there is direct job-search help and support after starting work.

Points to consider

  • Ask whether the service supports open employment, supported employment or both.
  • Discuss consent before information is shared with an employer and how workplace adjustments are handled.

Questions to ask a provider

  • Who is eligible, and is referral required?
  • Does the programme contact employers with my consent?
  • How long does post-placement support last?

Frequently asked questions

How can I check Employment Support listing details?

Review the listed source, then contact the provider to confirm its current address, services, fees and capacity.

Does a listing mean a provider has an open place?

No. The directory is a starting point for enquiries and does not confirm that applications are open or capacity is available. Ask the provider directly about its current waiting time and application process.

Do I need a referral or meet specific eligibility rules?

Requirements depend on the service and funding scheme. Confirm assessment, referral documentation, age and other eligibility criteria with the provider or administering public body.

What should I do if information is incorrect or out of date?

Confirm the current details with the provider, then use the “Suggest a correction” link on its profile to submit a verifiable update for review.
